Job Description:


The Exploratorium is seeking a collaborative, creative and data-driven Director of Public Programs to lead the development and design of a public program strategy and operating plan that aligns with and amplifies our mission as a leader in creating transformative learning experiences that spark curiosity, empower individual learning, and increase personal efficacy.

The ideal candidate is a dynamic, programmatic thought leader with strong communication skills, the ability to foster inter and cross-departmental synergy, and a passion for connecting people of all ages and backgrounds with science, art, and human perception. Additionally, they will lead by example on issues of diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusionand will align the audience engagement strategy and its people, processes, and policies with the Exploratoriums organizational values and aspirations to create a culture where anti-racism permeate every aspect of the work. This position reports to the Senior Director of Visitor Experience.


Strategic Leadership & Team Management

Lead the vision and implementation of a comprehensive engagement strategy that leverages the assets and expertise of the Exploratorium and aligns with the Exploratoriums objectives, priorities, and goals
Collaborate with Marketing and Online teams to create programs and strategies that can serve as a launch point for social media engagement, create buzz in the community, and drive onsite visits
Create strategies to engage different audience segments: members, families, young adults, those traditionally underserved by STEM, etc.
Provide direction and supervision for the Public Programs team; support, develop and coach team members and cultivate a cohesive, creative, and inclusive working environment
Oversee development and management of the program budget to ensure alignment with departmental initiatives and organizational feasibility
Vision, Innovation and Engagement
Engage a variety of modalities to enhance program offerings and encourage innovative and creative initiatives that inspire repeat, new and broader audiences
Establish robust performance metrics and data analytics to evaluate impact and success of current and proposed programs
Lead the design and implementation of programming that institutes effective changes to increase equitable access, and meaningful engagement, for visitors
Collaboration and Relationship Building

Deepen and enhance Exploratoriums engagement with local audiences through partnerships with peer institutions, community organizations, and festival organizers
Collaborate closely with other Exploratorium departments to develop, support and align programs and initiatives
Work in partnership with the Marketing Department to maximize gate revenue, and with the Institutional Advancement department to facilitate proposal development and fundraising efforts
Support and assist with special projects as needed


10 years leadership experience; experience working in a museum or other public-facing setting strongly preferred
Deep knowledge of experience design and lifelong learning with an emphasis on participatory learning; demonstrated grounding in or deep appreciation and passion for science and art as a way of knowing
A sense of wonder, fun, and risk-taking; and a desire to spark curiosity in self and others
Proven ability to manage a team and provide them with clear vision and guidance
Experience with budgets, staffing, deadlines, metrics, deliverables, and ability to think strategically about the resources needed for sustainability and growth
Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written; excellent public speaking and presentation skills
Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to work with staff at all levels in a complex, collaborative environment; ability to foster and sustain inclusive workplace values and relationships
Commitment to supporting the Exploratoriums efforts in the examination and eradication of structural racism in program content and development, hiring practices and workplace culture
Ability to participate in Exploratorium programs, events and receptions that may occur outside of normal working hours
