Job Description:
Primary Purpose The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist
will support all University departments and locations in
maintaining compliance with all applicable State and Federal
Environmental and Occupational Safety regulations through policy
development and implementation, routine inspections, research,
recommendations, and recordkeeping in order to promote compliance,
safe practices, and prevent injuries and environmental harm.
Essential Functions Supports the development and annual update of
the University’s written policies and procedures concerning
occupational safety and environmental compliance. Coordinates the
implementation of the University’s occupational safety and
environmental programs and recordkeeping requirements, including
maintaining the electronic file plan and supporting other
University communication tools (SharePoint, EHS home page, etc.).
Participates in developing and leading training programs to educate
employees in safety and environmental requirements, including, but
not limited to, the preparation and/or distribution of bulletins
and reports designed to educate employees in workplace safety and
environmental matters. Tracks the completion of safety training and
provides reports/metrics on completion rates. Identifies potential
safety hazards and recommends corrective actions. Coordinates with
University staff to ensure that corrective actions are resolved and
compliance reports are completed, filed and/or posted as required.
Supports the preparation for governmental inspections and
submission of reports to regulatory agencies. Oversees the Chemical
Inventory System. Obtains and maintains certification in hazardous
waste handling and environmental compliance. Assists in the
handling, storage and disposal of University’s hazardous waste and
cleaning of areas contaminated by hazardous waste. Cross-trains
with other University EHS personnel to provide support, teamwork,
and act as a back-up for other EHS roles in the department.
Understands ethical behavior and business practices, and ensures
that own behavior and behavior of others is consistent with these
standards and aligns with the values of the University and its
mission. Reviews regulations and maintains a working knowledge of
safety and environmental requirements. Seeks professional
development through participation in safety and/or environmental
professional organizations or through other educational
opportunities. Performs other related duties as assigned or

staff. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree (Two (2) years of
full-time experience in the same/similar position is equal to one
(1) year of completed post-high school education coursework). One
(1) year of experience in safety and environmental compliance or
related field. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in a
physical science, occupational safety and health, or related field.
One (1) year of experience in occupational, environmental
(hazardous materials and waste management), health, and safety
field. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability
to convey ideas or concept to individuals for understanding.
Ability to think critically using logic and analysis to identify
the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches. Ability to
research and summarize environmental and occupational safety
regulations, hazardous waste disposal, and chemical and radiation
safety requirements. Positive attitude, proven ability to work
successfully with diverse populations, and demonstrated commitment
to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion. Satisfactory
attendance within University Guidelines. Experience and sensitivity
in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and
inclusion in a university setting. Ability to engage and integrate
culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work. Work
Schedule Work performed during standard business hours. Infrequent
overtime may be required to meet business needs.
